I Rewatched All the Scooby-Doo Animated Movies from 1979 to 2004 and Here Are My Opinions. Part 1

Scooby Dooby Doo, Where Are Youuuuuu?

As you have may noticed by my last entry, I love Scooby Doo and I’m rewatching and reviewing every animated movie from 1979 to 2004. By reviewing I’m talking about If I like it or not, what do I like, have I seen it before and stuff like that, dont expect a full on critique of every movie, because probably on each review I will say Daphne is my icon and stuff like that. I have to give a disclaimer (at least I think I need to) I will be giving spoilers but we are talking about Scooby Doo movies so i dont think it is a big deal, but just giving you a heads up.

On this, the first part of the series of entries, I will be talking about the first four movies of Scooby Doo, sooo, lets get started.

1.Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood (1979)

Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood is a TV special from 1979, where Scooby-Doo and the gang are recording a TV show about their mysteries but Scooby wants to become a bigger star and have his own movie, soo Shaggy and Scoob film a bunch of pilots to show their talent. This is basically an anthology of all the pilots that they filmed, each one of them is a parody to movies or TV shows from that time (one of them being Charlie’s Angels).

Before this entry I didn’t know that this existed and I like it. It is a really cool concept and different from the other movies, in this you see them filming stuff, acting and having meeting with executives. At times it was really cheesy with the jokes and the laugh tracks, it also felt repetitive in the middle with all the pilots, but it came back with a really wholesome ending. In the end, Scooby-Doo wanted to quit the show with the gang and thousands of kids, outside of the TV network’s office, were screaming “Scooby Doo, wee need you” and Scoob decided to stay in the show. I really like the ending, it is stronger than the rest of the movie and there is little to say besides what I already did.

My grade to Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood is a 4/10

2.Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers (1987)

In this movie we follow Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy who inherited a house from one of his uncles, the house is filled with ghosts, so they decide to call ghost exterminators who are ghosts. Shaggy also learns that there is diamonds and jewelry that is now his, but it is missing, so they try to find it, while there is gorilla missing from a circus and a sheriff trying to find the gorilla. There is also an angry neighbor and his daughter who has a crush on Shaggy. I know, this movie is a lot. Before this project, I knew this movie existed but I didnt see it, until now. After watching it, I have may thoughts, first one being that I feel like this movie was fever dream, a lot of things were happening at the same time, I will try to breakdown each one, but I feel overwhelmed.

The Boo Brothers are the ghost exterminators, they are kind of cool, I like the dynamic they bring to the movie, but sometimes it felt too much, my favorite part about this storyline was when they were chasing a ghost and they start having a dance party, they are icons. Now, I’m going to talk about the most unnecessary part of this movie, the neighbor and the daughter. What was that? Why was that? It was so repetitive and boring, they were just chasing Shaggy to shoot him or to kiss him, that storyline was just a waste of time. Talking about wasting time, the gorilla, why? I’m not even going to talk about that. My favorite part of this movie was the jewelry hunting/search part, it was really entertaining, I wish the movie was more focused in that, because it was great watching them solve the clues, the actual villain chasing them and the reveal of the villain.

One thing I found interesting about this movie is that when they talk about the house, they say it is really old but they do not refer to the house as a house, they say it is a plantation. I did just throw this fact at you guys and run away, because I find it interesting, but lets not cancel Scooby doo because the movies are the only thing that has giving me happiness this past few months.

My grade to Scooby-Doo and the Boo Brothers is a 3/10

3.Scooby-Doo and the Ghoul School (1988)

In this movie, we follow Scooby, Scrappy and Shaggy who was hired to be a gym teacher in an all girls school, but this school is different because all of the girls are part monsters, like werewolf and ghost. Shaggy and his friends will navigate how to teach and confront someone that wants to kidnap the girls.

This is the first movie on the list that I have watched before, i didnt remember a lot but some parts i did. I totally forgot that Scooby was Scrappy’s uncle, I thought they were brothers or friends; while I’m talking about Scrappy I need to warn you that there is a scene where he raps and it has the same energy as Mr. Schue’s raps from Glee, I also want to fight Scrappy, he is just annoying, as a society we have move on from the need of Scrappy in Scooby Doo movies. One thing that confuses me about this movie was that Shaggy was hired as a Gym Teacher. SHAGGY GYM TEACHER. Like why? It doesnt makes sense, I would understand if it was Freddy, but is Shaggy, its just weird to me. Another thing that was weird in this movie is that they say random spanish words in random sentences, no character was from a country that spoke spanish, it just caught me off guard.

My favorite part about this movie was the girls, Winnie the werewolf and Frankenteen are my queens, I stan them, especially Frankenteen, she delivered the best dialogue in the movie “I’m Frankenteen and I’m outta here” an icon, a legend. I found really cute how the dads showed up in the middle of the movie to support their daughters, because it also affected the pressure that Shaggy and Scooby felt to saving the girls at the end of the movie.

Now, lets talk about the villain, Revolta, she is forgettable, she didnt have enough presence in the movie, I remember more the little dragon that was helping her, that dragon was iconic and better than Scrappy. The monster from the mirror, the one that is an evil version of Shaggy would have been a better villain, it was more entertaining the scene where he was than the entire time Revolta was on screen. The other school that was all boys was unnecessary, it just filled time. A lot of the things in this movie were just to fill time.

My grade to Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School is a 5.5/10

4. Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (1988)

Every year all of the monsters make a car race to win special prices, but this year the race is incomplete as the werewolf that competed is retired to Florida, so the host, Dracula, needs to find someone to be the werewolf, he chooses Shaggy, so he transforms him into a werewolf and kidnaps him along with Scooby, Scrappy and his girlfriend (yes, suddenly Shaggy has a girlfriend). Shaggy, who in this movie is a race car driver, needs to compete on the race to win the price of Dracula reversing his conversion, so that Shaggy can become a human again.

This movie makes me so nostalgic, I remember loving this movie, rewatching it and quoting it all the time. I watched this movie in spanish (that is my first language) and in this movie Dracula always said “Te daré un pequeño puntapie a la luna” (I dont have a direct translation but its something like Im going to kick you with the point of my foot to the moon) and I used to say that all the time. I have so much love for this movie and it is so much fun, It has a cool concept about a race car and I would like another movie about Shaggy being a race car driver. The race car part of the movie was entertaining but at the same time really long and repetitive because it had a pattern they tried to sabotage Shaggy, his girlfriend and Scrappy save them, Dracula comes back to narrate the race and is shocked that Shaggy is still in the race.

I think the weakness of this movie is that it has so many characters but we only get to know Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy, Shaggy’s girlfriend, Dracula, his wife, Crunch and his friend. I would like to know more about the other monsters that compete in the race, instead of the race being half of the movie. I get that they didnt show them because you want to root for Shaggy, but what if I dont want to root for Shaggy?. Also this movie walked so Cars could crawl.

My grade to Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf is 7/10
